During the first day of the CES 2025 conference in Las Vegas, one of the world’s largest technology fairs, the smart spoon from Kiring Holdings, a renowned Japanese company already well-known in the food industry, stood out and created a buzz.
The spoon, called “Electric Salt Spoon”, uses a soft electric current to concentrate sodium ion molecules in the food; thus more umami and salt flavor will be added to hyposodium foods.
These innovative spoons had already been launched in the Japanese market in 2024 at a price of about $130 (19,800 yen); however, the company plans to sell the product worldwide in the near future.
According to statements by Kiring Holdings, the spoon can significantly increase the amount of salt in the food being consumed, with the unique feature that no additional sodium already present will be added.
Moreover, it can be used like a regular spoon, but once activated, it allows the consumer to choose from four levels of intensity, increasing the perception of flavor in the dish.
“We improved the technology so that the spoon is used naturally at the table and is designed with a focus on ease of use and durability,” Kirin stated.
The company said it created the spoon to give additional support to people to reduce salt consumption, a particularly substantial matter in Japan, where the adult population consumes more than twice the amount recommended by the World Health Organization.
