As of Sunday, August 20, MTA’s fare increases go into effect across MTA subways, buses and commuter railroads.
According to the MTA, base fares for single rides will go up 15 cents, from $2.75 to $2.90. The cost of 7-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard will increase by a dollar to $34, and the 30-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard will increase by five dollars to $132.
The express bus base fare will go up from $6.75 to $7, and the 7-Day Unlimited Express Bus Plus pass will increase from $62 to $64.
Only for eligible customers, the reduced fare will remain half of the base fare, but will adapt to the implementation. So it will increase from $1.35 to $1.45.
Fares on the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North are going up by 4.5%.
This fare implementation was already planned for summer 2021, but it was put off due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Last month, the MTA board decided to schedule it for August–the company needs to make up for its past year revenue deficit. The first part of the plan has already been implemented: tolls of MTA bridges and tunnels have already increased from $10.17 to $11.19 as of August 6.
