UNSC: Out with the Old and in with the R2P Countries

Time: 2 mins read

The United Nations General Assembly Elected Côte d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Kuwait, the Netherlands, Peru and Poland to the United Nations Security Council for 2018-2019.

The Security Council is made up of 10 nonpermanent members Elected to two-year terms and five permanent powers: Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States. The Elected countries – all of Which were put forward by Their regional grouping – will begin Their term on Jan. 1.

During the election for new countries to participate on in the rotation on the SC, Italy and the Netherlands formed a “gentlemen’s agreement” where each country would alternate seats during each rotation . Interestingly enough, the Netherlands had to go through the election process again and it could have been at risk of being kicked out by another country if it had ran against them and might have received more votes.

On a slightly more policy driven brooms, 8 of the 15 members of the Council in 2018 share a commonality That they are apart of “Friends of the Responsibility to Protect” -a new international security and human rights norm to address the international community’s failure to prevent and stop genocides, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity .

According to UNHCR , the global displacement of Civilians two to conflict, persecution and mass atrocities is at its highest level, since the end of the Second World War. In Geneva, a report titled Global Trends Noted That on average 24 people were forced to flee the country each minute in 2015, four times More than a decade earlier, When six people fled every 60 seconds.

Since 2005 the Security Council HAS ADOPTED 58 resolutions and 17 Presidential Statements That refer to the “Responsibility to Protect.” Hopefully, the Council will make a conscious effort to consistently uphold Their commitment to R2P by taking early preventive action to avert emerging crises and halt atrocities wherever they are threatened.
