The explosion of the Tesla Cybertruck last week in front of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas allegedly involved the use of artificial intelligence, specifically ChatGPT from OpenAI.
Kevin McMahill, the sheriff of the Las Vegas police department, said that the man behind the attack, Matthew Livelsberger had planned the plan thoroughly, from purchasing explosives to using a cell phone without providing any personal information.
McMahill added that the use of generative artificial intelligence represents a “turning point.”
During a press conference he stated, “We knew that AI was going to change the game at some point or another in really all of our lives, this is the first incident that I’m aware of on U.S. soil where ChatGPT is utilized to help an individual build a particular device.”
A representative from OpenAI spoke immediately regarding the incident and stated that the company is determined to use its AI responsibly and that they are in constant contact with law enforcement on developments in the investigation.
It was then revealed that Livelsberger made a stopover en route to las Vegas to fill the Cybertruck with racing-grade fuel, causing subsequent leaks from the vehicle.
The Cybertruck also had about 60 pounds of explosive material inside, but police officers suspect that the explosion was caused by the flash of the weapon later used by Livelsberger to ultimately take his own life.
Livelsberger, a former Army Green Beret who served two tours in Afghanistan and resided in Colorado Springs, Colorado, left a series of notes describing the explosion as a stunt intended to serve as a “wake-up call” for the nation’s issues, officials revealed last week.
Therefore, the explosion resulted in minor injuries to seven individuals but caused almost no damage to the Trump International Hotel. Authorities confirmed that Livelsberger acted alone.
In his letters, Livelsberger expressed political frustrations and concerns about societal and political issues, both domestic and international, including the war in Ukraine. He stated that the U.S. was “terminally ill and on the brink of collapse.”
