A Thanksgiving Day fire that engulfed a Connecticut home and left it uninhabitable may have started when a turkey was fried inside the garage, according to the fire department.
The Weston Volunteer Fire Department responded to the blaze around 3:40 p.m. at a nearly $3 million, 10,000-square-foot home where roughly 25 people had gathered for the holiday. Dramatic images captured the house fully consumed by flames as firefighters worked to contain the rapidly spreading fire.
Crews launched an aggressive attack on the flames, but hazardous conditions and the structural collapse of the garage hampered their efforts, the department said in a statement. Adding to the challenge, a vehicle accidentally drove over a hose being used to battle the fire, cutting off the water supply for several minutes.
The fire burned for 16 hours before being extinguished, leaving the residence uninhabitable. Remarkably, no injuries were reported.
The exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation, but authorities suspect it originated from the turkey-frying incident in the garage. Multiple fire departments, including those from Westport, Wilton, Redding, and Ridgefield, joined the Weston team in combating the inferno.
