The National Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum “Giovanni Antonio Sanna”, commonly known as Museo Nazionale “G.A. Sanna” in Sassari, Sardinia, has just reopened after a 6 year-hiatus.
On Wednesday, August 3, 2022, Luana Toniolo, the director of Sardinia’s regional museum management body, along with the GA Sanna Museum’s director, Elisabetta Grassi, attended the grand reopening, which also included a presentation by the General Director of Museums, Massimo Osanna.
The building that houses the G.A. Sanna Museum, which was originally opened in 1932, resembles a classical temple. The museum primarily shows archaeological finds that were made at the beginning of the 19th century during excavations at the site of the Roman colony Turris Libyssonis, today’s Porto Torres, or that come from private collections and donations. In 1973 the museum, organized according to modern criteria, was reopened. The ethnographic material and the art gallery are housed in one wing. The other rooms are available for the archaeological material, which is constantly enriched by the excavations carried out by the State Antiquities Administration established in 1958.
The museum’s redevelopment project was part of a broader plan developed in conjunction with Italy’s Ministry of Culture, an ambitious effort to valorize the museum through functional upgrades to its spaces and a new, more modernized layout that will facilitate a better visitor experience.
The partial reopening is made possible thanks to the addition of a temporary room dedicated to the island’s traditional Sardinian attire. “On the Trail of Clement” is an exhibition of clothing, sorted by geographic area, from the second half of the 19th to the first half of the 20th century.
The date for the completion of the renovation project is not yet known, but future plans for the museum include initiatives that involve non-profit associations and university programs. The goal is to create an inclusive environment that encourages participation in social, cultural and educational endeavors.
