The 59th edition of the Super Bowl Halftime Show is still a long time away, but news like this cannot be kept under wraps for long. Pulitzer Prize winner rap artist Kendrick Lamar will be the main performer.
Lamar himself broke the news, sparking excitement among his fanbase, by sharing a video on his social media where he’s seen grappling with a football-launching device.
The sporting event, which is a global sensation, will be held on Sunday, February 9, 2025 at the Caesar’s Superdome in New Orleans.
“Rap music is still the most impactful genre to this day. And I will be there to remind the world why,” Lamar said in a statement. “They got the right one.”
Kendrick Lamar, co-founder of the creative label pgLang, received critical and cultural success with his debut album good kid, m.A.A.d city, released in 2012. Since then, the rapper has won 17 Grammy Awards and became the first artist outside of classical and jazz genres to win a Pulitzer Prize, with his 2017 album “DAMN”.
As reported by Variety, the creative direction of the performance will be overseen by pgLang, the rapper’s company. Seth Dudowsky, NFL Head of Music, said, “Few artists have had such a profound musical and cultural impact as Kendrick Lamar. Time and time again, Kendrick has demonstrated his unique ability to construct moments that resonate, redefine and ultimately shake the very foundation of hip hop.”
The artist then confirmed that a new album is currently in production; thus, a release is expected before the Superbowl if not even during his performance.
Lamar’s last album hit in fact, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, was released in May 2022. In April of this year, Like That by Future, Metro Boomin and Kendrick Lamar spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and in June Lamar’s record-breaking single, Not Like Us, spent two weeks at No. 1.
Will K-Dot be able to meet the high hopes and expectations of his fans? We will only find out on February 9, 2025.
