Misogyny and anti-trans rhetoric, which had already emerged during the recently concluded election campaign, appear to have intensified following Donald Trump’s victory. This has led some women and queer individuals to seek protection through the purchase of firearms and self-defense training.
The British newspaper The Guardian interviewed several Americans from marginalized groups who, concerned about an increase in assaults, have started attending courses to better learn how to use guns, rifles, and pepper spray.
Meanwhile, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has targeted Sarah McBride, the first openly trans person elected to Congress, sparking a new wave of rhetoric against transgender individuals.
Marginalized groups, including Black, bisexual, and trans people, are thus facing heightened psychological and physical violence. Some firearm-related clubs, like LA Progressive Shooters, report a significant rise in memberships, particularly among women and LGBTQ+ community members who now view personal protection as a vital necessity. Tom Nguyen, the club’s founder, stated that his bookings have surged dramatically, with courses fully booked until 2025. Similarly, the U.S.-based Liberal Gun Club has seen a growing number of memberships, with thousands of new applications.
The politically and socially charged climate of violence has fueled the emergence of a movement among socially vulnerable individuals. Despite previously avoiding such “tools,” many now feel the need to defend themselves.
Experts, such as YouTuber Tacticool Girlfriend, warn that impulsive purchases of this type of equipment, if not accompanied by adequate training, may not be an effective response to personal safety. Research indicates that access to firearms does not reduce the risk of violence. On the contrary, women who use firearms are three times more likely to face death compared to those who do not own them.
