Nissan is saying that their Rogue and Rogue Sport SUVs can stop running…while you’re driving. The problem stems from a flip-open jackknife key fob not staying completely open, and so far, there’s no fix. Some fobs have malfunctioned so that if the key is not fully open, the ignition will turn off. And with the engine off, air bags would not function in the event of a crash. This is the case for over 800,000 vehicles.
The models that are specifically subject to the recall are the Nissan Rogue Model years 2014 – 2020, and Nissan Rogue Sport Model years 2017 – 2022. Owners will be notified in March with an interim letter telling them not to attach anything to the key ring. Another, later letter will tell them to take their SUVs for repairs. Owners are also being implored to ensure their fob always remains open. So far, Nissan has not been made aware of any injuries from this defect.
This recall is the second one in recent weeks for Nissan. Over 400,000 vehicles of various makes and models were recalled due to degrading airbags. A solution to that issue, Nissan said, would be disclosed on April 10th.
