Authorities in New York have launched an investigation after a human torso was discovered inside a suitcase floating in the East River on Wednesday evening.
The grim find was reported by a ferry crew around 5:30 p.m. near Governor’s Island, prompting NYPD’s harbor unit to recover the suitcase and transport it to Pier 16 at the South Street Seaport, police said. The remains were then sent to the city’s medical examiner’s office for further examination.
As of Thursday morning, officials had not determined the male victim’s identity or age. Investigators are treating the case as suspicious, though no official ruling has been made on the cause of death.
Wednesday’s find marks the second time in a week that human remains have surfaced in a public location. On Tuesday morning, officers responding to a call in Queens found a man’s body near the Clearview Expressway. Police said his hands had been bound, but no details have been released on the circumstances of his death.
Both cases remain under investigation as authorities work to determine what happened and identify the victims.
