A thief broke into a luxury high-rise apartment on the Upper West Side early Thanksgiving morning, making off with a safe containing nearly $400,000 in cash and valuables, according to police reports.
The break-in occurred around 12:15 a.m. at 75 West End Avenue. The intruder reportedly forced their way through the front door, damaging the door frame, and seized a safe holding $220,000 in cash and $160,000 in jewelry. Police sources revealed the burglar also took three Goyard pouches valued at $6,000 and seven pairs of Louis Vuitton sneakers worth $7,700. The stolen Goyard bags, known for their craftsmanship, can fetch as much as $2,000 each.
A friend of the apartment’s tenant had been staying there for several weeks but was out when the burglary occurred. It remains unclear how the intruder accessed the 39-story building, which is equipped with a doorman. Authorities are currently reviewing security footage to identify the perpetrator.
Speaking to The New York Post, residents expressed disbelief that such a theft could occur in a building with round-the-clock security. “I’m shocked this happened here,” said Anjori Mitra, a 34-year-old attorney who resides in the building. “This place has a team of doormen, and it’s usually very secure. It’s unsettling.”
Mitra added that while she feels relatively safe walking along West End Avenue during the day, she avoids the side streets late at night. “I always use a car service when it’s late. It’s frustrating, given how much we pay for safety.”
Other residents shared similar concerns about increasing crime in the neighborhood. “It’s happening more often, and it’s frightening,” said 62-year-old Isaac Saidmehr. “My wife comes home visibly shaken after hearing about incidents like this. We need more police patrolling the streets.”
