Two children, 2 and 4, drowned in a pond outside their Long Island apartment on Saturday after their mother fell asleep inside, according to police and sources.
According to Suffolk County police, the incident happened behind the Fairfield Townhouses in Holtsville at around 3:15 p.m.
The girls reportedly left their house while their mother was sleeping. Only minutes after a family member reported the children missing, a search team discovered the sisters’ bodies in the water. Authorities say they were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital and later declared dead.
How long the girls were in the water until they were rescued remains unknown.
While they look into the event, the police are requesting that anybody with information contact their homicide tip line.
