- Santos Targeted by GOP Bill: Freshman GOP Representatives from New York have introduced measures aimed deliberately at fellow Republican George Santos. Two debuted Tuesday, with one titled the No Fortune for Fraud Act: it would prohibit lawmakers from profiting off their story if convicted of a crime. Long Island Republican Anthony D’Esposito introduced the bill, which has been co-sponsored by Reps. Nick LaLota, Mike Lawler, Marc Molinaro, Nick Langworthy, and Brandon Williams. D’Esposito said at the bill’s unveiling “If you are defrauding the American people, making a mockery of the people’s house … you should not be able to turn it into a payday.”
- NJ Wildfire Contained: A New Jersey wildfire that erupted on Tuesday has been fully contained as of last night, officials said. While the blaze was active, it consumed 418 acres of Stafford Forge Wildlife Management Area in Little Egg Harbor. No injuries were reported and no evacuations were ordered. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Jersey Forest Fire Service has said they would remain at the scene to ensure safety.
- Narcotics Transporters Arrested in NJ: A pair of individuals from Texas were arrested in New Jersey last week after investigators said they were transporting large quantities of narcotics—namely fentanyl—through Bergen County. According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, Camerino Hernandez-Atanacio and Alexis Araujo-Atanacio of Odessa, Texas, are charged with second-degree possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. Hernandez-Atanacio was additionally charged with third-degree possession of cocaine. They were taken to Bergen County Jail ahead of a hearing.
- CT Boasts 5 of The Best US Hospitals: According to a survey by Newsweek of over 2,000 hospitals in 80 countries, Connecticut can boast a quintet of the best hospitals in the United States. Yale New Haven Hospital (#31), St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center (#164), Griffin Hospital (#202), John Dempsey Hospital (#399), and Hartford Hospital (#403) all cracked the list. Yale New Haven also came in at #164 in the overall worldwide rankings.
- Islanders Win A Big One Versus Buffalo: The New York Islanders defended home ice valiantly against the Buffalo Sabres, winning their clash last night by a score of 3-2. Josh Bailey, Casey Cizikas, and Hudson Fasching each scored a goal for the Isles, with Bailey getting the game-winning assist off of Fasching’s knee. The win is a huge blow to the Sabres’ playoff hopes, while the Islanders continue to stand their ground in the Metropolitan Division.
- Knicks’ Streak Comes To An End: Madison Square Garden saw the Charlotte Hornets play spoiler, handing the New York Knicks a 112-105 loss and denying them a tenth straight win last night. Despite being up 16 points at halftime, the Knicks couldn’t put the Hornets away, and so an Eastern Conference bottomfeeder walked away victorious. “At the end of the game,” RJ Barrett (who scored 27) said, “they were the hungrier team.” Kelly Oubre Jr. led Charlotte with 27 of his own. The Knicks’ surge has them still firmly in the East’s fifth seed, but a win could have put them on the brink of fourth.
- Daniel Jones Gets Paid: New York Giants play-caller Daniel Jones inked a massive four-year $160 million dollar contract yesterday, securing him the big money he had requested days earlier. The move then prompted the Giants to franchise tag Saquon Barkley, thus keeping the nucleus of their playoff team in the Big Apple for next season. $82 million of Jones’s deal is guaranteed at signing, with an extra $35 million coming from incentives. Jones passed for 3,205 yards with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions last season while rushing for 708 yards and seven touchdowns.
