The former headquarters of the infamous Hells Angels Motorcycle Club have been converted into apartments that are describe as the “epitome of refined living in the heart of the vibrant East Village.”
The rent of a single bedroom in the pre-war structure is presently $3,599. According to the property’s StreetEasy page, several of the units were purchased soon after being listed.
After 50 years at 77 E. 3rd St., the motorcycle club sold the house and relocated to the Bronx in the early months of 2019. The six-story structure received a complete refurbishment and currently houses 22 apartments, with an art gallery and a tattoo business on the first floor. Both the Harleys that were formerly parked outside and the brilliant brick front are gone.
The Angels’ East Village clubhouse was the scene of several violent episodes over the years. A man was shot in the chest on the street outside the club in 2016 after a parking disagreement; a food deliveryman was beaten in the face outside the building in 2018; and back in 1978 the then-chapter president reportedly threw his lover off the roof to her death.
Many of the East Village’s gritty aspects have been replaced with fashionable stores and throngs of students as Lower Manhattan has undergone decades of gentrification. Apartments are advertised for an average rent of $3,599 per month, which is much less than the current $4,250 median for a one-bedroom in Manhattan but more than twice the neighborhood median of $1,490 for studios and one-bedrooms two years ago.
