After throwing down the gauntlet to the Meta Group’s social networks, buying the now former Twitter, and to OpenAI’s ChatGpt with its artificial intelligence “Grok,” Elon Musk has already identified the rival to “annoy” during the coming year.
According to rumors in recent days, the world’s richest man is reportedly planning to duel with Gmail, launching a new email platform, which many have already dubbed as “Xmail.”
The 53-year-old himself confirmed this week that the latter project is already in the works, writing on his social network, “It’s on the list of thing to do.”
To date, Gmail is certainly the most widely used email platform in the world. In fact, the latter has more than 2.5 billion users: practically a third of the global population. For Musk, therefore, it will certainly not be easy to challenge such a giant; however, this does not mean that the next DOGE secretary will give up on his new project.
First of all, it will have to be determined whether Xmail will be free, just like Google or Outlook services, or paid. At the moment, it is also somewhat complicated to predict what the service run by Musk and X Corp will look like from a security and privacy perspective.
According to experts, the platform could offer end-to-end encryption, making the service more secure. X, after all, has already implemented some degree of encryption for direct messaging. It is quite likely that the email platform will also have an ad spam-free version, dedicated to those who have a premium subscription on the former Twitter.
Musk’s goal, moreover, will be to allow users to be able to email even very heavy files. This feature has always been one of the weaknesses of Gmail and Outlook. It is quite likely, therefore, that Elon will be banking heavily on this factor.
It will have to be seen, finally, whether the richest man in the world will actually be able to rename his new project as “Xmail.” As revealed by Forbes, there is already a platform on the web currently operating under the same name.
