New York’s illustrious and historic Waldorf Astoria will reopen in the spring. The eight-year renovation by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon also involved a redesign based on the hotel’s signature classic style revised with a modern twist. The hotel will begin accepting reservations from Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024, for stays available from spring 2025.
The hotel that opened in 1931 in the heart of Manhattan, was purchased in 2016 by Chinese company Dajia Insurance Group for $1.95 billion and then closed in 2017 for a $1 billion makeover project. The restructuring, however, took longer than expected due to a number of factors including the pandemic.
As stated on the Waldorf Astoria’s official website, “After an extensive and meticulous restoration from the sidewalk to the spire, the historic hotel is entering a new era with a design inspired by the acclaimed Pierre-Yves Rochon that celebrates the building’s original architecture and beauty, reimagined for today.”
The rooms are larger than in the past, and to achieve this they have been decreased from 1,400 to 375. The iconic Hilton-operated Park Avenue hotel also offers guests an expansive spa, a well-equipped fitness center, an outdoor terrace, and as much as four thousand square feet of event, meeting, and gala space that includes the Grand Ballroom, Jade Room, Astor Salon, Basildon Room, and Silver Corridor. These have been meticulously restored with the goal of bringing out the vintage Art Deco design elements and finishes.
