Alex Consani is the world’s first transgender woman to receive the title of Model of the Year. The 21-year-old American was honored at the Fashion Awards 2024 held in London. A sleek and slender physique, bleached hair and eyebrows, Consani has become a global star mainly through TikTok where she is currently followed and admired by more than four million followers.
In her acceptance speech she stated that her victory is “a big step in the right direction. Because change is more than possible-it’s necessary!” For the occasion, the model wore a Union Jack print dress by Turkish-British designer Dilara Findikoglu. On the same occasion, she also thanked her parents for their support and paid tribute to black transgender women who fought for the next generation. In particular, she remembered models Connie Fleming and Aaron Rose Philip and their valuable contributions, which also made her success possible. In this regard, Consani stressed the importance of supporting each other in the fashion industry, particularly for those who until now, have been marginalized.
The young model has made her way with great determination in the world of high fashion working for prestigious brands such as Chanel, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Versace, and Victoria’s Secret. But her runway debut was in 2021 with designer Tom Ford. Last October, she and model Valentina Sampaio made history by becoming the first trans models to walk the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Today, her personal achievement is also that of the fashion industry opening up to inclusion.
