At a live event with Oprah Winfrey in Farmington Hills, Michigan, on Thursday night, Kamala Harris once again highlighted her Second Amendment stance.
While discussing gun violence, Winfrey mentioned Harris’s previous revelation during a debate with former President Donald Trump on September 10, where she disclosed that she is a gun owner.
“I didn’t know that” Winfrey remarked, prompting laughter from the audience at the event, titled “Unite for America”.
Harris then responded, “If someone breaks into my house, they’re getting shot,” before quickly adding, “I probably shouldn’t have said that… my staff will deal with it later.”
Immediately, the Trump War Room took the momentum as an occasion to mock the Democratic Candidate by posting the incriminated clip on X.
Yet, the response was not long in coming, and in fact Neera Tanden, who is the director of the domestic policy council, answered the taunt sarcastically: “Dear Trump War Room. You really got her here. Please, please don’t make an ad of this video of her and air it in the swing states, particularly rural and exurban areas. It would be really so terrible if you did that”.
Following these heated exchanges, Democratic pollster Matt McDermott commented: “Arguably nothing has hurt Republicans more this election than constantly sharing videos of Kamala that make her more likable and authentic”.
Harris has been trying to strike a balance between advocating for gun control measures and respecting the Second Amendment, which is sacred to most Americans. While addressing school shootings and gun violence Thursday night, she stressed the need for “common sense” solutions.
“I think for far too long on the issue of gun violence, some people have been pushing a really false choice to suggest you’re either in favor of the Second Amendment or you want to take everyone’s guns away,” she added. “I’m in favor of the Second Amendment and I’m in favor of assault weapons bans, universal background checks, red flag laws”.
Harris’ statement clearly indicates that she is looking to gain the support and the vote from those conservatives who are undecided but who are still asking for strong regulation on assault weapons, a primary point of contention between pro and anti-gun supporters.
