Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will be Kamala Harris’ running mate in the November election, unnamed sources confirmed to CNN.
The choice of Walz, 60, comes as a surprise while rumors of other high-profile names, notably Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, had been dominating the pols. The Minnesota governor, however, has seen his chances rise considerably in the last week, especially after a viral interview in which he derided some Republicans as “weird.”
Walz is seen by many as a safer choice for Harris because of his solid reputation as a moderate liberal. Adding to Walz’s appeal is the fact that he governs a Midwestern state that Trump intends to win.
Although Biden won Minnesota in 2020 by 7 points and no Republican has won the presidential race there in more than 50 years, Trump and his running mate JD Vance have stepped up efforts to proselytize the state and dye it red.
