Now that this much-anticipated debate between President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump is over, the first thing that bears comment is that what we saw is two geriatrics vying for the most powerful position on earth. Both men should be happily retired enjoying their remaining years instead of doing this.
The networks do not ever lay a level playing field. The moderators are always people from Left-leaning organizations, giving the Democrat candidate an advantage as they will either toss softballs at them or actively refute what the Republican candidate says. I’d love to see candidates have to field questions from Tucker Carlson or Bill O’Reilly.
The moderators are both anchors for CNN. Jake Tapper has repeatedly equated Trump with Hitler and Dana Bash’s husband is one of the ex-intel agents who signed off on the communication that Hunter Biden’s laptop was “Russian Disinformation,” which we now know is a complete falsehood. So much for journalistic integrity.
Yet credit should be given to them; they did a pretty even-handed job and did well to keep the participants in line. The microphone cut-off system made this more enjoyable.
President Biden appeared frail with a very weak and raspy voice. Maybe they should have juiced him up with the same stuff they gave him before the State of the Union address.
Trump was uncharacteristically measured for most of the evening, but he also didn’t really say anything surprising. I would say that this was not a debate. A debate would be “Discuss the merits of the Federal Reserve and Fiat Currency versus the Gold Standard” and then a discussion point/counterpoint for an hour. Many times, as predicted, both candidates avoided the questions and simply filibustered by parroting their own campaign points.
I’m patently alarmed at how President Biden appeared tonight. He is obviously cognitively impaired (I’ve been saying this for years) and is clearly no longer up to the task of what is notoriously the most difficult job in the world. He spent a week preparing and yet seemed unprepared at times, had some noticeable brain farts, and looked like an empty husk in the moments when he was speaking. I’m not going to further kick a man when he’s down, but someone needs to have a long conversation with him about resigning or we seriously need to enact the 25th Amendment. Although do we really want President Kamala Harris? I won’t be surprised if Biden will not be the nominee when all is said and done. However, though I reject him as a politician, I actually feel bad for the man.
The most surprising line of the night was Trump saying, “let’s not act like children.” Post-debate, what’s not surprising is that even on many Democrat friendly channels right now, the long knives are coming out for the President.
On the surface, I guess you could say Trump won, but does anyone really win these things? I believe that America was the big loser tonight. What really terrifies me is that millions will still vote for this decrepit old man because they hate his opponent with a burning passion. That’s the real threat to democracy.
