The United States secret service has disclosed that one of its agents was robbed at gunpoint this weekend in Los Angeles while President Biden was visiting for a significant fundraising event.
According to the organization, the agent was returning from work when was accosted in a residential neighborhood in Tustin, which is about an hour drive in the south-east direction from Los Angeles.
The agent fired his gun during the confrontation, police reported. Though the Secret Service said they are not sure if anyone was hit.
Police said the agent was uninjured, but the assailants stole his bag at gunpoint.
Someone reportedly called the Tustin police department shortly after 9:30 p.m. to report the robbery.
Authorities have not named the agent. On Monday, Tustin police said they had not yet identified a suspect. However, officers did find some of the agent’s stolen belongings in the area.
According to police, a silver Infiniti FX35 was seen leaving the scene of the alleged robbery.
“The employee discharged their service weapon during the incident but it is unknown if the assailants were struck,” a Secret Service spokesman, Anthony Guglielmi, said in a statement. “We are thankful that the employee did not sustain any injuries.”
Biden and former president Barack Obama held a fundraising event with many celebrity attendees in Los Angeles on Saturday, including Jimmy Kimmel, Julia Roberts and George Clooney. The event raked in more than $30 million for Biden’s re-election campaign, making it the largest sum raised from a single-event in his campaign so far.
The incident remains under investigation, though police said “there is no known threat to the public.”
