Republican White House frontrunner Donald Trump will not support a nationwide ban on abortion, believing instead that regulations on pregnancy termination should be left to the states. He said this himself in an approximately 4-minute speech-video aired Monday morning on Truth Social.
“My point of view is that now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint, it’s going to have to be the states that decide by vote or a law, or maybe both. And whatever they decide has to be current legislation. In this case, state legislation,” the former president said.
“Many states will have different policies,” Trump added. “Many will have a different number of weeks [within which to terminate a pregnancy, nda], or some will be more conservative than others, and that will be the case. Basically, this is all about the will of the people.” Last month, in an interview with WABC radio, the former president had leaned toward supporting a national ban on abortion around 15 weeks of pregnancy.
Trump also boasted that he was “proudly responsible” for the overturning of the historic Roe v Wade ruling by the conservative-driven Supreme Court (3 of the 6 conservative justices – out of the 9 total – were appointed by him himself), which enshrined constitutional protections for women for abortion in 2022.
“This 50-year battle on Roe v Wade has taken abortion out of federal hands and brought it into the hearts, minds and votes of citizens in every state-it’s really something big,” Trump commented.
The GOP guru then reiterated that a different discourse would cover cases of incest, rape and when the mother’s life is in danger.
“You must follow your heart on this issue,” Trump said addressing Republicans. “But remember that you also have to win elections to restore our culture and, in fact, to save our country, which is currently and very sadly a nation in decline.”
