King Charles III is officially opening up historic Balmoral Castle to the public for the first time in over a century, inviting visitors to take a paid tour inside the expansive property that has long been a vacation spot for the royal family.
The move may raise some eyebrows as it is widely known that this was one of Queen Elizabeth’s favorite family gathering places. Now the Scottish estate that has not offered tours to the public since it was built in 1855 will put out the welcome mat.
These tours are being advertised as a “historical journey,” and are an opportunity for visitors to “learn about the origins” of the castle, beginning with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert purchasing the property in 1852. The interior tour promises to “travel through time” and show the public how Balmoral “has been loved by generations of the royal family.”
Visitors will be able to ogle several rooms inside the castle, including those occupied today by Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla, while being led by “experienced” professional guides, as stated by the official website for Balmoral Castle.
Additionally, those visiting will be able to book an afternoon tea session and dine in the castle’s recently renovated restaurant where they can “savour a selection of delicious sandwiches, scones and cakes,” along with vegetarian and gluten-free options.
The guided interior tour, which is currently sold out, costs just over $125 per person, the $190 option includes an afternoon tea session.
