A Cruise driverless car in California drove directly into the wet cement of a pavement project and got stuck there.
It’s safe to say this is disastrous PR for these types of vehicles. Officials said it was unclear how the vehicle crashed.
The incident happened in San Francisco on Tuesday. It left Paul Harvey, 74, a bystander, in stitches after he found it wedged into the freshly poured cement. A retired contractor who lives in the city’s Western Addition neighborhood took a photo of the car in the cement.
“I thought it was funny. I was kind of pleased because it illustrated how creepy and weird the whole thing is to me,” Harvey told the New York Times.
The incident happened just a few days after California regulators gave approval to expand driverless taxis in San Francisco.
In a three-to-one vote, the California Public Utilities Commission, which regulates self-driving cars, gave Cruise and another company Waymo, permission to offer paid rides during the day.
Cruise has so far only been operating their vehicles in one-third of the city, while Waymo was offering free trips to passengers.
