Is the legal peril finally catching up to Donald Trump?
Just 35% of Americans have a favorable view of him compared to 62% who view him unfavorably, according to an Associated Press-NORC poll released on Wednesday.
The survey, which was conducted from last Friday to Monday, also amazingly discovered that 53% of all voters say they definitely wouldn’t vote for Trump for president in 2024. Another 11% said they probably wouldn’t. 53% of Americans also support the various indictments of Trump.
This poll underscores the mirage that has been the GOP primary; 6 in 10 GOP voters, the survey found, have a positive view of Trump. However, his iron grip on the party, while dominant, perhaps won’t mean very much if the other numbers from this poll are mirrored in other surveys. He seems poised to win the nomination. But a general election seems like an infinitely harder thing to win if he really has this bad of support.
While this poll is sure to make waves, it is just one poll. The Trump team would likely much rather point to a recent NYT/Siena poll that had Trump and Biden dead even at 43% support. The real problems with that poll now are, first, that it came before the Georgia indictment and second, that it’s pretty impractical to rely on a Biden-Trump poll so far before the election.
If the newest survey is to be believed, Trump the Republican nominee—not Trump the candidate for the Republican nomination—will struggle.
