Never let a Labrador stand guard.
It’s a lesson a San Diego, California, homeowner had to learn the hard way after an unknown person stole his bicycle last July 15 after sneaking into a garage that had been left unlocked.
Making the episode decidedly bizarre, however, are surveillance images – which show how the unsuspecting victim’s dog hurriedly dashed off in the direction of the burglar just as the latter was leaving with his loot.
To ward him off? Far from it: to feast him. So much so that the animal managed to get the man back inside the garage and cuddle him for almost a minute – before the latter climbed (perhaps reluctantly) onto the expensive black Electra bicycle he had just stolen.
“You’re so cool,” the man is heard telling the dog. “You’re the coolest dog I’ve ever known. I love you, too. You’re a sweetheart”, the thief can be heard saying in a video of the incident, posted on the San Diego Police Department’s Facebook page.
The man even asks worriedly, “Where’s your daddy?” complaining that the homeowner had carelessly left the garage open.
The thief, whose face is perfectly visible in the footage, is now wanted by the police. His overall loot that night was $1,300. And possibly a new friend.
