Carabinieri police found a 57-year-old dead in the garden of his home in Corte Palasio, in the northern province of Lodi, with two cuts to the throat late on Monday, sources said.
The police rushed to the scene after neighbors heard screams and sounded the alarm.
The victim, Pierangelo Repanati, a journalist who was the mayor of the town between 2004 and 2009, is thought to have been attacked while watering plants in his garden. Initially it was suspected that robbers killed him during an attempted burglary, the sources said. However, after further investigation it was subsequently suspected that he had fallen over an obstacle in his kitchen, smashing a bottle in the process, and the glass shards had cut his throat by accident. He then stumbled out to the garden seeking help. Further investigation is ongoing to confirm the exact cause of death.
