Italian fuels giant ENI stated on Tuesday that it was opening two Gazprom bank accounts to pay for Russian gas. In the light of “imminent” payment deadlines, the oil colossus said, it had opened two current accounts named Z as a precautionary measure to comply with new Russian payment procedures.
It said the move had been made in agreement with Italian institutions and respecting international sanctions on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine, “in the context of ongoing talks with Gazprom Export”, which “will bear any eventual cost or risk connected to the different method of payment.”
“The gas payments will continue to be in euros, not roubles as Russia has demanded,” Eni stated.
