A fatal crash involving a Tesla on Manhattan’s FDR Drive early Tuesday left a woman dead and a man seriously injured after both were ejected from the vehicle, authorities reported.
The incident took place around 2:30 a.m. near East 70th Street on the Upper East Side, according to the NYPD. The Tesla lost control, struck a guardrail, and flipped over, scattering debris across the roadway before catching fire.
First responders arrived to find the car engulfed in flames. The female driver, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, a 26-year-old man, survived and was transported to New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition, officials said.
Photos from the crash site show extensive wreckage, with large fragments of the vehicle strewn across the road as firefighters worked to control the fire. Investigators are still determining what led to the crash, and it remains unclear whether speed was a factor.
Traffic on the northbound lanes of the FDR Drive was halted for several miles as emergency crews responded to the accident.
