Manhattan once again cements its status as one of the world’s culinary capitals, according to the Michelin Guide, which on Monday evening honored the city’s finest restaurants at an exclusive ceremony in Hell’s Kitchen.
A historic milestone was achieved by Jungsik, a Korean restaurant located in Tribeca: not only did it receive three Michelin stars, making it the only new recipient of the top honor this year, but it also became the first Korean restaurant in the United States to earn three stars.
The other three-star restaurants in the city remain Eleven Madison Park (Madison Avenue), Le Bernardin (51st Street), Masa, and Per Se (both on Columbus Circle).
One of the surprises of the evening came with the awarding of two stars to César, a SoHo restaurant founded by chef César Ramirez, and to Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare, which had lost its three stars the previous year following a controversial ownership change.
Eight new restaurants earned their first Michelin star. Notable among them are the revamped Café Boulud on the Upper East Side, the omakase restaurant Bar Miller in Alphabet City, and La Bastide by Andrea Calstier in Westchester County.
But it wasn’t just starred restaurants: New York also saw 16 new additions in the Bib Gourmand category, a designation for restaurants offering good quality food at affordable prices. Among these are Bayon and Bungalow in Manhattan, as well as Bonnie’s and Falansai in Brooklyn.
The Michelin Guide, which was founded in 1900 by the French tire company to encourage travel by car, has since become a bible for food lovers. Today, fewer than 150 restaurants worldwide can boast three stars (14 of which are in the U.S., tying with Italy, but behind France’s 30, Japan’s 20, and Spain’s 16), with around 500 restaurants holding two stars.
