A deadly stabbing in Lower Manhattan Thursday night left a 17-year-old boy dead and another teen injured in a shocking attack reportedly triggered by a language misunderstanding, according to police and witnesses.
The violence unfolded at approximately 7:40 p.m. outside 17, John Street in the Financial District. Authorities say three male suspects approached two teenagers, questioning if they spoke English. When the teens indicated they did not, the encounter turned violent, law enforcement sources revealed.
The younger victim, identified as Yeremi Colino, 17, suffered a fatal stab wound to the chest. His companion, an 18-year-old man, was slashed in the arm. Both were rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where Colino was pronounced dead. The other victim remains hospitalized in stable condition, according to the NYPD.
Witnesses described a chaotic and gruesome scene outside Kuu, a busy ramen restaurant. One bystander, who spoke on condition of anonymity, recounted the horrifying moments. “I saw this kid clutching his neck, blood pouring from his mouth. It was like something out of a horror movie,” they said.
Investigators revealed that Colino had been staying at Manhattan’s Roosevelt Hotel, now serving as a temporary shelter for migrants. Authorities have not confirmed whether the victims’ housing situation was connected to the incident.
As of now, no arrests have been made. The area remains cordoned off as investigators comb the scene for evidence. The NYPD has yet to release descriptions of the suspects, and the motive behind the attack, beyond the initial confrontation over language, remains unclear. The investigation is ongoing.
