Two men armed with sledgehammers smashed a window at a Chanel store on the Upper East Side on Sunday evening, police and sources reported. The incident took place around 7 p.m. at the luxury retailer located at the intersection of East 64th Street and Madison Avenue.
Photographs from the scene show shattered glass scattered across the sidewalk in front of the store. While police were still investigating, it was not immediately clear whether any merchandise had been stolen. However, sources indicated that at least two items may have been taken during the break-in. No injuries were reported, and no arrests had been made as of late Sunday night, according to authorities.
Max Morris, who lives near the Chanel location, described the situation as alarming but not entirely unexpected. “It’s obviously not a good thing to see if you live in the area, but what do you expect? This is New York City,” Morris told The New York Post. He expressed frustration over the state of the city and hopes for more action to address such issues. “Hopefully we can have someone who does something about this.”
“I’m not surprised. That’s why we really need a good mayor to come in and someone to clean this up, this is a terrible situation,” he added.
The investigation is ongoing, with police working to identify the suspects and determine the full extent of the damage and any potential losses.
