Archbishop Caccia, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, will be in conversation with Dr. Vincenzo Pascale, Associate Professor at Long Island University and adjunct lecturer in the Globalization Studies and International Relations program at SBU. Their discussion will explore the diplomatic efforts of the Holy See Mission to the United Nations, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the Holy See’s role in global peace processes and conflict resolutions.
Archbishop Gabriele Caccia was appointed by Pope Francis as the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations in 2019. Born in Milan, Italy, Archbishop Caccia was ordained a priest in 1983. Later he was sent to the Vatican’s Diplomatic School, the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome, where he obtained a Doctorate in Sacred Theology together with a Licentiate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Gregorian University. In 1991, he joined the diplomatic staff of the Holy See, serving in Tanzania. In 2002, he was appointed Assessor for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State. Pope Benedict XVI named him Apostolic Nuncio to Lebanon and Titular Archbishop of Sepino, Italy, in 2009. In 2017, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines. As the seventh Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, Archbishop Caccia has the right to participate in the general debate of the General Assembly, intervene, and reply, but without the right to vote, initiate resolutions, or put forward candidates for UN posts.
