The International Center of Photography (ICP) will present We Are Here: Scenes from the Streets, a comprehensive exhibition exploring 50 years of contemporary public life captured by more than 30 street photographers worldwide, beginning in the 1970s. Curated by guest curator Isolde Brielmaier, PhD, along with independent curatorial assistant Noa Wynn, the exhibition will be opening at ICP on Sept. 25, 2024, and will continue through Jan. 6, 2025.
We Are Here features artworks by photographers from Algeria, China, Egypt, Germany, India, Japan, Russia, South Africa, the United States and others, offering a new perspective on the “street” and the interactions that occur in various public and community spaces. As we live in a world marked by social tensions and miscommunications, the exhibition emphasizes the unique ability of street photography to capture local cultures and current events. From street fashion to protests, the images document ordinary and extraordinary moments, highlighting the resilience and shared aspects of human life.

Elisabeth Sherman, ICP Senior Curator and Director of Exhibitions and Collections, expressed: “We hope this exhibition sparks reflection and conversation about the historical and current dynamics of public spaces that are shaped and mediated by gender, race, and socio-economic status, and how we critically understand the ways they govern our lives”.
“As we conclude ICP’s 50th anniversary celebration with We Are Here, we reaffirm our mission to educate the public on the power of visual storytelling and promote international dialogue about the role of a concerned photographer in today’s world,” said Bob Jeffrey, ICP CEO.
