The streets of Manhattan’s Little Italy are set to burst with life once again as the Feast of San Gennaro returns for its annual celebration.
Starting Thursday, the 11-day event immerses visitors in Italian culture with its lively blend of food stalls, performances, and religious ceremonies, all in tribute to Naples’ patron saint, San Gennaro.
What began nearly a century ago as a modest one-day celebration by Neapolitan immigrants has evolved into a massive festival spanning 11 blocks. At its core, the event still honors Saint Gennaro, who died as a martyr in 305 A.D., but the real draw for many is the food. Expect to find classic favorites like cannolis, sausages, and zeppoles, with the air thick with the aromas of southern Italian cuisine.
The festival opens with the blessing of the vendors, and visitors can enjoy various events throughout the week, culminating in the Grand Procession on Saturday, September 14, from 2 to 5 p.m. This year, the honor of Grand Marshall goes to Chef Anne Burrell, known for her role on the Food Network.
As crowds flock to the celebration, several of Little Italy’s streets—including Mulberry, Grand, and Hester—will be closed off to traffic. Those planning to attend should check the NYC Department of Transportation for details on closures.
