A subway dispute in Queens turned deadly when a young man was struck by a train on Monday.
The incident happened around 11:20 a.m. at the 74th St.-Roosevelt Ave station in Jackson Heights. A 20-year-old man was bumped by an 18-year-old on the platform, leading to a verbal argument. The situation escalated when the 20-year-old hit the younger man in the head with a bottle.
The 20-year-old then fled down the platform, followed by the 18-year-old and a bystander who likely tried to intervene. When the 20-year-old reached the end of the platform, he jumped onto the tracks, possibly trying to escape.
Police believe the other two men did not force him onto the tracks. They were visibly shocked as they tried to stop an oncoming F train. Unfortunately, the train couldn’t halt in time and struck the 20-year-old, carrying his body toward the Elmhurst Ave station. He was pronounced dead in the tunnel.
The 18-year-old was treated for minor injuries, and neither he nor the bystander are facing charges. The identity of the deceased man has not yet been released.
