Three to five inches of rain fell during the intense rainstorm that struck the tri-state area on Sunday night, flooding roads and creating long lineups at airports – which led officials from New York City to iusse an alert throughout the five boroughs.
Early on Monday the National Weather Service declared a flash flood emergency for northwest Suffolk County due to four to six inches of rain.
The NYPD reports that standing water caused at least one lane of traffic to close on many major highways in Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan.
Floodwaters beneath the bridge rendered the 86th Street Transverse in Central Park inaccessible, as reported by the NYPD, whereas traffic cameras captured sections of the Garden State Parkway submerged.
Flight disruptions were reported by both LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International airports on Sunday afternoon and into the evening due to weather. JFK Airport flight difficulties were also forewarned by the NYPD.
Amtrak service was also impacted; due to floods in Newark, rail travel between New York and Philadelphia was momentarily halted.
Forecasts indicate that thunderstorms will likely make landfall in the Big Apple in the afternoon.
