An MTA employee who had reported being attacked on the subway was found to have stabbed himself, according to authorities on Saturday.
54-year-old cleaner Henry Herring earlier told police that he had been beaten and stabbed by a homeless person while riding the southbound F train at the Jamaica-179th Street station early on Wednesday. He said his hands were sliced when he lifted them to shield his face during the attack. He also had cuts on his chest from slashes.
However, a police inquiry found that Herring most likely stabbed himself and made up the attack claim. He was thus accused of making up a police report.
“Assaults on MTA employees are a real issue and the NYPD has made real progress identifying and capturing perpetrators. What’s alleged in this case is beyond disappointing, pulling resources from investigations of actual crimes, while undermining confidence in safety of the transit system,” Tim Minton, MTA Communications Director, told Eyewitness News.
