A 12-year-old boy filled the role of a midwife for his aunt when she suddenly went into labor at their Long Island residence.
The miraculous delivery occurred on Friday around 10:15 a.m. on East Street in Flanders, Long Island, when Southampton Town Police Department received a 911 call from Miguel Dominguez, who told them his 22-year-old aunt was in labor.
Public Safety Dispatcher Christopher Brenner immediately gave Miguel instructions over the phone on how to help his aunt deliver the baby.
Officials reported Officer James Cavanagh arrived at the location as the baby was being born, and assisted with the care of the mother and the newborn.
An ambulance arrived soon after and took the mother and child to Peconic Bay Medical Center. Both the mom and child are now resting and are in healthy condition at the hospital.
Brenner reflected on the experience to Patch, saying, “I’m amazed how the 12-year-old boy did such a great job.”
“It was one of the most rewarding calls I have taken over the 31 years that I have been there,” he said. “While I was taking the call, the other dispatchers that I was working with relayed all the information out to the responding units. They, too, deserve a lot of credit. It was a team effort,” he added.
