The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has revealed the 18 artists who will be creating installations to decorate JFK’s anticipated Terminal 6.
These contemporary artists were chosen by a committee made up of members of the Port Authority, developers JFK Millennium Partners, and an independent art expert.
“Public art that is inspiring and evocative of our region is an essential part of the Port Authority’s strategy to create world-class airports that are becoming destinations in their own right,” said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton in a statement. “Just as we have done at LaGuardia and at Newark-Liberty’s Terminal A, the public art at JFK’s new Terminal 6 will dazzle travelers and help create a sense of place unique to New York.”
The New York City airport’s new terminal, which is expected to cost $4.2 billion and is a part of the airport’s $19 billion transformation, has an art budget of $22 million, according to the Port Authority. The works are curated by Public Art Fund, a nonprofit specialized in public art.
“Art takes a starring role at the new Terminal 6. Walls, floors, ceilings, and volumes will all be enriched with architecturally integrated, site-specific commissions by some of the most extraordinary artists of our time,’ said Nicholas Baume, artistic and executive director of Public Art Fund. “Like Terminal 6 and New York itself, the reach of the art program is global, featuring artists from near and far, from groundbreaking, emerging voices to senior, celebrated figures.”
The first gates at JFK Airport’s Terminal 6 will open in 2026, and the terminal is expected to be fully completed in 2028.
Ocula Magazine published information on many of the artists creating installations and what type of work they are designing.
Nina Chanel Abney, Laure Prouvost, and Haegue Yang will have installations suspended from the new terminal’s ceiling.
Barbara Kruger, Charles Gaines, Nevin Aladağ, and Sky Hopinka will create wall-mounted works.
And 10 artists—including Candida Alvarez, Charline von Heyl, and Shara Hughes—will create glass mosaic floor medallions.
The other artists creating works for the airport are Felipe Baeza, Kerstin Brätsch, Teresita Fernández, Eddie Martinez, Kambui Olujimi, GaHee Park, Uman, and Dyani White Hawk.
