NYPD deployed “heavy resources” throughout Central Park to bring to justice a man who tried to sexually abuse a woman who was sunbathing, according to police and sources.
The assault happened around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to the police, while the woman was tanning in Central Park’s Great Hill area, located at West Drive and West 104th Street. The suspect, who was described as a black man in his 30s with curly hair, exposed himself and tackled the victim, a 21-year-old woman, from behind after she made an attempt to get away, according to the NYPD.
The victim was able to beat off the attacker, but he left the area before he could be taken into custody. Members of the Special Victims Division are interviewing the woman after emergency medical personnel took her to a nearby hospital for assessment.
As of Monday afternoon, NYPD patrol cars could be spotted traveling through the park as the quest continued. Police are reportedly searching for outside cameras and witnesses. A drone assisted the officers in their search of the area.
“Right now, we are searching every part of this park for witnesses and evidence,” NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell stated. “We are cutting the park into pieces.”
Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-577-TIPS.
