A boa-constrictor snake was discovered in a basement apartment on the Upper West Side on Wednesday, according to the New York Police Department.
Around eight in the morning, a worried resident reported to the NYPD that the five-foot-long snake was attempting to enter a basement apartment on West 87th Street by climbing up an external fence.
Since reptiles are prohibited in New York City, the ASPCA, an animal welfare group, was tasked with caring for the snake after the NYPD’s emergency service team captured it. The ASPCA then reported that the snake was placed with a foster guardian outside of the city.
Authorities stated that they were still investigating the snake’s origin.
The find occurred a few days after a resident of New York wrecked a rented U-Haul vehicle while moving a couch with his roommate and discovered a live, 3.5-foot white snake under the seat.
