Two NYPD officers were wounded in Queens overnight in a shooting that also saw the alleged gunman injured, according to authorities.
The officers attempted to stop a person riding a moped against traffic near 23rd Avenue and 82nd Street while investigating a series of moped and scooter robberies in East Elmhurst.
The individual fled on foot as the officers pursued him for several blocks, during which the suspect allegedly opened fire, striking one officer in the bulletproof vest and the other in the leg. Both cops were transported to Elmhurst Hospital and have since been released.
The suspect, a 19-year-old staying at a nearby migrant shelter, was shot in the right ankle and is currently in stable condition at the hospital. A firearm was also recovered at the scene.
Authorities stated that while the suspect has no previous arrests in New York City, he is implicated in two violent robberies in Queens on May 21, when he reportedly stole items such as purses, phones, and debit cards.
Mayor Eric Adams visited the injured officers in the hospital, condemning the attack as “senseless” and highlighting the bulletproof vest that saved one officer’s life.
“This vest is the reason a young officer is going home today,” Adams remarked, emphasizing the officers’ discipline, focus, and professionalism.
NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban reported that the officers are in good spirits and affirmed the department’s support. The investigation continues.
