The 14-year-old son of a fireman was tragically shot by his younger cousin on Sunday morning in a Brooklyn public housing building, according to police and sources.
The unidentified victim was discovered suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest when police arrived at the Howard Houses in Brownsville in response to a 911 call just before 10:30 a.m., according to the NYPD.
After being taken to Brookdale Hospital, the teenager was declared dead. A suspect, who is thought to be the boy’s 12-year-old cousin, is in custody.
Along with looking into the potential that the shooting was an accident, detectives are also looking into how the youngsters got hold of the weapons, who owned it, and whether or not it was obtained lawfully.
The most current CompStat numbers for 2024 show that the 73rd Precinct has experienced a sharp rise in shootings and killings.
Twelve killings had been reported by the command as of May 26, which is a 200% increase from the four recorded at the same time last year. Additionally, there have been 23 gunshots with 27 injuries so far this year, up from 14 shootings with 15 associated injuries so far in 2023.
Just a few blocks away from the location of Sunday’s tragic incident, at 101 Osborn St. in Brownsville, there was a double shooting two weeks earlier that left one man dead and another critically injured.
