A New York City icon, the Charging Bull statue in the Wall Street area, was vandalized during a free Palestine march on Thursday night.
The graffiti on the statue reportedly read “Death to Israel” and “Free Palestine,” as shown in photos taken by news sources.
This protest was held amid renewed calls for a ceasefire from the public after at least 104 Palestinians were killed and another 280 were injured during an Israeli attack as they congregated around humanitarian aid trucks in Gaza. Gazans who witnessed the tragedy said they saw Israeli troops open fire on the crowd of hungry Palestinians who were trying to pull boxes of flour and canned food from the aid trucks coming in.
Some in the group of protestors in NYC included men who were dressed in traditional Jewish Orthodox garments, who climbed on top of the Charging Bull statue.
Multiple people were arrested at City Hall during the march.
According to the NYPD, eight people were issued summonses for disorderly conduct and another was charged with resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration.
The United Nations is currently investigating Thursday’s shooting in Gaza by the IDF and has also warned that the region is on the verge of famine. On Thursday the World Health Organization announced that a tenth child has died of starvation in Gaza. The protests that are occurring, including the one in New York City, reflect the global anger about the events occurring in the war-torn zone.
