In a captivating evening hosted at the Italian Cultural Institute in New York, the region of Basilicata took center stage with its rich cultural heritage. The event saw the presence of Fabio Finotti, the director of the Institute, Consul General Fabrizio Di Michele, and the President of Basilicata, Vito Bardi, who provided a journey into the treasures of this Southern Italian gem.
The presentation was delivered by the Director General of APT Basilicata, Antonio Nicoletti and the evening was made possible through the support and collaboration of ENIT (Agenzia Nazionale del Turismo), which played a crucial role in bringing Basilicata to the forefront.
As the spotlight shone on the beauty of region, attendees were treated to a visual feast showcasing its picturesque landscapes, historical landmarks, and vibrant traditions. The speech offered a compelling narrative of a region that seamlessly blends ancient history with modern charm, making it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking authenticity.

President Vito Bardi, a distinguished figure with a deep commitment to preserving and promoting Basilicata’s cultural identity, brings a wealth of experience to his role. His extensive background includes service in the Guardia di Finanza, where he rose to the rank of General, and he held key roles in various commands. In 2019, he was elected as the first center-right president of Basilicata, breaking a tradition of center-left administrations that lasted for 24 years.
The collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute, with the support of ENIT and as part of the “Turismo delle Radici” project, serves as a bridge connecting Basilicata with an international audience, fostering mutual understanding and appreciation.

A highlight of the evening was a concert featuring the distinctive sound of the zampogna, a traditional bagpipe-like instrument synonymous with the region. Originating from the pastoral traditions of Southern Italy, the zampogna echoed the melodies of Basilicata, creating an experience that transported the audience to the heart of this area.
The zampogna, with its hauntingly beautiful tones, has been an integral part of Basilicata’s cultural heritage for centuries. Historically played by shepherds during transhumance, it carries a blend of pastoral simplicity and emotional depth. The performance not only showcased the technical virtuosity of the musician but also served as a living testament to the region’s enduring musical traditions.
Director Fabio Finotti expressed his enthusiasm for showcasing the diverse cultural tapestry of Italy and the significance of these events in promoting cross-cultural dialogue. Consul General Fabrizio Di Michele echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the role of such presentations in strengthening ties between Italy and the United States.
