For its inaugural presentation at ADAA The Art Show, Roberts Projects is pleased to present a selection of seven new paintings by German artist Lenz Geerk. Building on the psychological exploration of intimacy and tension that characterizes Geerk’s body of work, these new paintings echo recognizable territory—a beach, a house on fire, flowers, moons and an artist—while expanding on the ethereal tension and psychological frailties by shifting perspectives and context. Art historical references fold in on themselves, generating an anachronistic tension that emanates outward.
By manipulating traditional techniques from a contemporary perspective, Geerk creates psychologically charged paintings that emphasize interiority while removed from any specific time or place. Emphasizing his subjects in such a way as to draw out the hidden emotions of the human psyche, Geerk depicts people in the throes of excitation concurrent with an inner placidity. Crafting postures and gestures through a fictionalized lens of representation, Geerk imagines how a certain fragile moment can be expressed through atmosphere and absence. The restrained palettes add to the aura of emotional tension, transporting the viewer into his otherworldly universe.
In conjunction with the presentation, a fully illustrated catalogue will be published by Roberts Projects.
