545,498 New Yorkers reportedly moved to other states in 2022 as a result of the Empire State’s high taxes and poor quality of life, according to US Census statistics.
Florida was the number one destination, followed by New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania, as well as more distant places like Texas and California.
The emigration was somewhat mitigated by 301,000 new citizens migrating to New York in 2022, more than any year in the previous decade, but not enough to prevent a net population loss of 244,000 people.
Moreover, the departures have failed to have an effect on New York City housing pricing, with median rents still at all-time post-COVID-19 highs. According to a recent Elliman survey, Manhattan median rentals were $4,350 in September, up from $4,022 during the same month previous year. Rents in Brooklyn and Queens are also around record highs, at $3,700 and $3,528 per month, respectively.
In 2022, more New Yorkers relocated to Florida than any other state, with 91,000 people doing so. Other fleeing New Yorkers chose closer destinations, with 75,000 moving to New Jersey, 50,670 to Connecticut, and 44,000 to Pennsylvania. In fourth place is California, which recruited 31,000 New Yorkers while absorbing itself a net population decrease of 342,000 in 2022.
According to the statistics, the number of New Yorkers migrating to Texas topped 30,000 for the first time in 2022, up from 18,000 in 2019. North Carolina, Massachusetts, Virginia, and Georgia completed the top 10 list.
Wyoming, Montana, Iowa, Mississippi, and South Dakota, on the contrary, were the least popular alternatives, with less than 500 persons moving from the Empire State in 2022.
According to another New York Post survey, New York has lost a net population of 1.9 million since 2012, when the negative trend began.
