New York City was named the nation’s safest city for pedestrians in a recent assessment by KURU Footwear.
The direct-to-consumer shoe manufacturer analyzed the top 37 metro cities based on their walk score and fatal pedestrian accidents to determine the safest and most hazardous places for walkers in 2023.
The city that never sleeps might not have been everyone’s first bet for being a pedestrian-safe city given its reputation for fast yellow cabs, roaring junctions. However, with creative safety measures and a commitment to encourage walking, the concrete jungle has turned its streets into a refuge for pedestrians.
New York City has become the model for urban pedestrian safety thanks to meticulous traffic management, the implementation of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, and the enhancement of public awareness initiatives. The Big Apple has a high walking score of 88 out of 100 and experienced 1.09 pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 residents.
