Eric Adams–who once called himself the “Biden of Brooklyn” in a moment he might not likely live down–has actually not spoken to the POTUS since 2022.
Despite the New York City Mayor having a history as a Biden surrogate, he told CNN that he and the president have not conferred since Biden was in New York last year. However, he added that his team has been talking with federal officials inside and outside of the White House about the flow of migrants to New York City.
He also said he still supports the president’s reelection.
But the mildly embarrassing admission comes as the migrant crisis that’s over 50,000 strong continues in New York City, with the New York Times reporting a new battleground: soccer fields.
On Randall’s Island, off the Upper East Side of Manhattan, a tent complex big enough to sleep 2,000 men is being built atop four soccer fields with fall play around the corner. The fields are used by teams from the nearby public high schools and private leagues citywide; more than 3,000 people have signed petitions urging Adams to halt the plan.
One of the petitions has been promoted by Adams’ consumer protection commissioner, Vilda Vera Mayuga, who is also the commissioner of Manhattan’s West Side Soccer League.
In an email Sunday, Mayuga urged league parents to sign the petition and that the migrant crisis accommodations “ simply cannot be at the expense of our youth and the NYC government must make responsible decisions.”
Mayuga’s dual role was revealed on Thursday by the news site The City, and she then said in a statement that “Anyone who knows me or my work knows the passion I bring to supporting and advocating for immigrants and it breaks my heart that, with an email, I sent a very different message,” she said, adding she didn’t craft or sign the petition.
